 – Lucky lottery store in N.H. does it again.  The winning Powerball ticket, worth an estimated $135.6 million, was sold at a convenience store that is building a reputation as the place to buy lottery tickets.
Schwarzenegger spars with Davis on gaming.  Two days before Labor Day -- the traditional kickoff of campaign season -- the gloves started to come off in California's untraditional recall election as actor Arnold Schwarzenegger accused Gov. Gray Davis of pandering to Indian gaming interests.

Illinois Rep. Boland Wants to Add Keno.  Illinois Rep. Mike Boland says Keno would add $130 million of new state revenue and be a boost to small business owners, many of whom already offer lottery games at convenience stores and gas stations.
 – Whittaker in news again.  Jack Whittaker, the record West Virginia Powerball winner, helped fund a house for the woman who sold him his ticket, but neighbors of the new homeowner are uneasy about a male sex-offender living there.
Brock defends lottery opposition.  North Carolina State Sen. Andrew Brock, R-Davie, continues his strong opposition to a statewide lottery while pushing a proposal to move the start of the public school year to after Labor Day.
Computerized lotto must wait awhile.  Tennesseans would be left to play a scratch-off lottery game for months before they get a chance to play computerized games such as lotto, under plans discussed by the Tennessee Education Lottery Corp. board yesterday.
 – Powerball Jackpot Jumps To $140 Million.  No one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday's Powerball drawing, driving the jackpot to an estimated $140 million.  That's the largest current lottery jackpot in the world and the 8th largest Powerball jackpot ever.
Man wins battle with Hoosier lottery.  After a six-month battle, the State Lottery Commission of Indiana agreed to release the time a $100,000 winning ticket was purchased at Joe's Junction in Trafalgar.

 – Two men face sentencing in "remarkably unsophisticated" lottery plot.  Was it a scheme by a mastermind who developed a "remarkably unsophisticated, but almost successful plot" as prosecutors claimed, or was it "more of knuckleheads in the news" when a scheme was attempted to rig a $20,000 raffle drawing, as a defense attorney claimed?
Friends in lottery club win $175,000.  Ten women who have been pooling their money to buy lottery tickets for about eight years finally have something to show for it -- $175,000.
Forum criticized for including Georgia lottery firms.  A lottery forum planned for minority businesses in Memphis next week came under fire yesterday, with some vendors saying that inviting two companies that work for the Georgia lottery to participate makes it appear that a Tennessee-Georgia partnership is a done deal.

 – S.C. lotto questions deal with Georgia.  Top officials in South Carolina said Tuesday savings projections acquired by Tennessee lottery board members regarding a potential partnership with the successful Georgia lottery are likely inaccurate.
 – N.D. LOTTERY: Board supports two extra games.  North Dakota gamblers may have their pick of two additional lotteries next year, which offer smaller prizes and less daunting odds than the more widely played Powerball game.
Bigger jackpot means higher lottery sales.  Many customers of the Blue Flash Food Mart - the location where the last West Virginia Powerball jackpot winner was sold - are hoping that lightning can strike twice.

 – $115 Million Powerball Jackpot Up For Grabs.  There were no jackpot winners in the Saturday Powerball drawing, but 759,003 Powerball players across the nation won a total of more than $5.2 million in prizes.  The jackpot for the Wednesday, August 27 Powerball drawing is $115 million, with a cash option of $59.5 million.
Mega Millions Jackpot Grows to $26 Million.  Since no ticket matched all six numbers to win the estimated Friday's $21 million jackpot, that jackpot now grows to an estimated $26 million for the Tuesday, August 26, 2003 drawing.
 – Pembroke Pines hits Lotto jackpot for a 4th time.  Who said lightning can't strike twice?  It hit in this city for the fourth time in 11 years on Saturday when a Florida Lotto ticket, a Quick Pick, matched all six numbers in the $27 million drawing.

Lottery's promotional firms to be named.  The organization that is putting Tennessee's new lottery together expects to hire a public relations and marketing firm on Monday, and several Nashville-area firms are among the finalists.
 – Winners in waiting.  Teri and Cornell Davis, winners in the lawsuit brought by 20 Englewood Hospital employees, are still waiting for their $25.4 million lump-sum check from the New Jersey Lottery Commission.

 – Powerball Jackpot Soars to $100 Million.  Summer may be winding down but the excitement surrounding America's favorite lottery game is heating up.  There were no Powerball jackpot winners Wednesday but 488,267 players across the nation won a total of more than $4.9 million in prizes in America's Game.  Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing the jackpot grew to an estimated $100 million, with a cash option of $51 million.  That's the largest current lottery jackpot in the world.
 – One of these days, someone is going to win Super Six jackpot.  The last Super Six jackpot, won on Nov. 8, 2002, has been followed by 81 straight rollovers and now stands at $27.5 million.  In the world of lottery jackpots, 20 rollovers is a long run.  Eighty-one rollovers is astounding.
 – Powerball Jackpot Reaches $100 Million.  There was no jackpot winner in the Wednesday Powerball drawing, sending the Saturday Powerball jackpot to $100 million, with a cash option of $51 million.  The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 8-22-35-46-48, Powerball 15, Power Play 5.

Pensioner woozy after near-win lottery saga.  An Italian pensioner felt faint and had to be taken to hospital when he realised he had forgotten to hand in a lottery ticket that could have won him €66 million (US$73.4 million).
 – Uniondale Woman Hits Jackpot.  A 71-year-old single mother of five from Uniondale, New York was handed a $20.6 million check Tuesday morning for holding the winning Mega Millions ticket from the July 11 drawing.

Bookies in Exile.  Many of the bookmakers who started offshore betting operations so optimistically are finding themselves locked into an isolated way of life that with each passing day seems a worse bet.

 – Lottery deal with Georgia best bet, expert says.  Tennessee's lottery could reap as much as an extra $249 million over a seven-year period by joining forces with Georgia, according to a consultant hired by the state lottery board.

 – Calif. Lottery Commission to Hold Meeting in Sacramento.  The California State Lottery Commission will hold a public meeting at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2003, at the California Lottery Headquarters Building located at 600 North 10th Street in Sacramento, California.
 – Alaska Eyeing Powerball, Expanded Gambling.  Alaska lawmakers and state officials are working over the summer on proposals for a lottery and video gambling machines, both to help ease the state's budget problems.
 – Powerball Jackpot Grows to $85 Million.  There were no Powerball jackpot winners Saturday but 543,766 players across the nation won a total of more than $5.5 million in prizes.  Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot grew to an estimated $85 million, with a cash option of $43.5 million.
Lottery Corporation Names Consortium Of Law Firms.  The Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation Friday named a consortium of law firms including Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis PLLC, Burch Porter & Johnson PLLC, Metz Hauser & Husband PA and Spence & Wade PLLC to provide outside legal services to the Tennessee Lottery.

 – Record Italian Jackpot Scooped by Single Ticket.  One lucky gambler won Europe's biggest-ever jackpot on Wednesday, pocketing nearly 66 million euros (US$75 million) and ending an almost six-month Italian lottery drought.
 – Lawsuit has a pull-tab lottery plan on hold.  A new Michigan instant lottery game planned for bars this fall is mired in a court fight over whether it is legal and is unfair competition to charities that sell similar pull-tab games.
Six indicted in numbers racket.  Six people were charged yesterday in what authorities say is a massive gambling network that grossed millions of dollars a year in Northeast Ohio.

Big games enter lottery's big picture.  A giant jackpot lottery — such as Powerball or Mega Millions — is likely to become part of Tennessee's buffet of games, but the heads of lotteries in Tennessee and Georgia say a possible partnership won't affect which game Tennesseans play.
 – Hitting the jackpot.  A southeast Missouri couple plans to use their $4.3 million in lottery winnings to get out of debt.  John Gibson bought three dollars worth of tickets earlier this month from the Country Mart grocery store in Jackson, where he lives with his wife, Beverly.  He let the computer pick the winning combination, and took an unsual combination of half lump sum cash, and half annuity payments.

 – Lottery-Style Drawing Picks Ballot Order.  The California Secretary of State held a lottery-style drawing Monday to determine the order of candidate's names on the recall ballot.  The complete order of the letters drawn is r, w, q, o, j, m, v, a, h, b, s, g, z, x, n, t, c, i, e, k, u, p, d, y, f, l.
 – Carson widow wins $91 million SuperLotto Plus jackpot.  Patricia Frierson went to her factory job after winning the $91 million California Lottery jackpot but she went home in a limousine.  Frierson had the sole winning ticket for Saturday night's SuperLotto Plus game.  She bought it on Saturday afternoon at a liquor store down the block from an Econolodge motel, where she has lived for three years because she no longer could afford her town home.
 – N.D. explores lottery agreement.  Numbers for North Dakota's new Powerball lottery may be provided by another state lottery's computer system, a move that officials say would reduce the cost of running the game in a small, rural state.
 – CT Lottery makes good after two balls stick.  Connecticut lottery officials said Saturday they will honor lottery tickets containing numbers of two lottery balls that got stuck during a drawing Friday night.
Italian lottery hits $110m.  With still no winner Saturday, the Italian lottery jackpot grew to a record 63 million euros (US$109.46 million) for the Wednesday drawing.

Police think Whittaker was drugged.  The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department says it believes Powerball multimillionaire Jack Whittaker was drugged inside a Cross Lanes strip club when someone broke into his car and snatched a briefcase containing more than $545,000.

 – $3.4M Ticket Hasn’t Been Cashed.  The sale of a winning Megabucks ticket worth $3.4 million at the Brooklin General Store in June continues to cause a stir.
Wrong lottery numbers get transmitted.  A computer error caused some television stations around Louisiana to broadcast the wrong Pick 4 numbers for the Louisiana Lottery's Tuesday night drawing, officials said.
 – Facing Fraud Trial, Mayor Wins Lottery.  The mayor of the small town of Dawson, Georgia won $500,000 in the Georgia Lottery a month before his trial on charges of insurance fraud and forgery.

 – Mega Millions jackpot hits $50 million.  There were no jackpot-winning tickets sold for the Tuesday Mega Millions lottery, increasing the jackpot for the multi-state game to $50 million.  The next drawing will be Friday.
 – Lotto winner hits big jackpot a second time.  Shelley Hedwall claimed a $1.12 million jackpot from the Colorado Lottery on Tuesday, five years to the day after she hit the Lotto jackpot for $4 million.
California Lottery CEO Leaves.  California Lottery CEO Joan Wilson, who headed up the lottery through a number of tumultuous episodes including two failed advertising agency reivews, has left her post after some three years on the job, a lottery spokeswoman said.
Lottery theft suspects get only a ticket to jail.  William Michael Lomas allegedly broke into a Massachusetts General Store May 11 with two other men and took the cash register and 24 books of lottery scratch tickets, with as many as 200 tickets in each book.
Lottery winners say they feared for their safety.  Details about the disputed $25 million Mega Millions jackpot continue to emerge: Teri and Cornell Davis were so nervous that someone was going to snatch their winning New Jersey Lottery ticket that they hired two armed off-duty police officers to drive them to the lottery office in Trenton to claim their prize.

 – Powerball Winner Offers 'No Excuses' for Incident.  Jack Whittaker said he hopes the discovery of his evening of drinking at a strip club will not affect the Jack Whittaker Foundation, which he established to help charities operated by the Church of God and other causes.
 – Mega Millions Considers Multiplier.  In the wake of Texas' choice to join the Mega Millions, the multi-state lottery game may be enhanced to include a multiplier option similar to the Powerball Power Play feature.
Thieves Steal Lottery Winner's $545,000.  More than half a million dollars was stolen early Tuesday from record Powerball winner Jack Whittaker's vehicle parked outside a strip club, but the money was recovered, a sheriff's deputy said.
 – TEXAS JOINS MEGA MILLIONS.  The Texas Lottery Commission voted today to join 10 other states in the multistate lottery Mega Millions.  Lottery officials expect $324.5 million in game ticket sales in Texas over 10 months starting this fall.

Lottery defendant: I'm angry.  For three days, Jamal Townes listened quietly as his co-workers at Englewood Hospital accused him of being a modern-day Judas for allegedly hiding a $25 million winning lottery ticket from their office pool.  Yesterday, the 27-year-old X-ray technician got the chance to respond.
State could be lucky winner of $100,000 Powerball prize.  Montana Lottery officials announced last week that a $100,000 winning Powerball ticket, which was purchased in Kalispell in March, has yet to be cashed.  If the holder of the ticket doesn't come forward by Sept. 26 - six months after the drawing - the money is forfeited to the state.
Georgia Lottery set to go broke without rules change.  Georgia's lottery-funded scholarship program is so popular that the state may be unable to fund it within three years.  Some lawmakers think one way to help the program survive would be to tighten rules that allow marginal students to qualify.

 – Canadians Face Lottery Fraud Charges.  Seven Canadians face criminal charges that they ran a phony lottery scheme that sought to defraud consumers in the United States using telemarketing, the U.S. Attorney's office in Boston said Friday.

Lottery Sales Hit Record In Kansas.  A new marketing strategy designed to keep games fresh and payoffs healthy helped send sales of the Kansas Lottery to record levels, officials said Thursday.
Harless to refile lottery lawsuit.  Jackson County, West Virginia lawyer Larry Harless said Thursday he has sent letters to the state Lottery Commission and attorney general, giving them 30 days’ notice of his intent to refile a lawsuit challenging the legality of state-run video lottery.
