Lottery News for August, 2000

Thursday, August 31, 2000

 – It's a pretty slow news day for The Big Game (and gaming in general), so I'll use the time to ask that if you're enjoying this site, why not let your friends and family know about it?  We've made it really easy for you: just go to the Tell a Friend page (it will open in a new window), and enter your and their e-mail addresses.  No need to worry about getting your (or your friends') e-mail addresses on some mailing list -- we don't record your information.  We provide the service just to help you spread the good word.  (Thank you!)

 – The Big Game lottery jackpot, at $41 million, currently is the largest lottery jackpot in the United States.
 – Check out this story about Australian tycoon Kerry Packer, who lost $20 million in a three-day gambling stint in Las Vegas last month.  Although the story doesn't say, I would guess that they comped him during his stay.
 – The Michigan Lottery has this story about a Michigan man who won $150,000 in the August 22nd drawing.  The story includes the location of the ticket purchase.
 – There was no jackpot-winning ticket sold for the Tuesday drawing, but seven lucky players won a $150,000 prize: 2 in New Jersey, 2 in Georgia, 2 in Illinois, and 1 in Michigan.  See the Winning Combinations page for the complete rundown of winners by prize category.

 – Have you signed up for your Jackpot Alerts yet?  If not, you may be missing out on big jackpots!  Jackpot Alert will send you an e-mail when the Big Game jackpot reaches the amount you specify.  The best part is that unlike other e-mail based services, your e-mail address will be kept confidential, and you will never be sent unsolicited e-mail by us.  If you'd like, you also have the option of receiving our Newsletter, which is published every now & then, when we have new features and announcments to let you know about.
 – Here's some help for you if you're having trouble with your blackjack play: Certified Master Hypnotist, Don "The Dragon" Ling, has created a self-hypnosis tape that you listen to 20 minutes every day for three weeks.  Apparently, he instructs you when to hit, stand, double down, etc.  Maybe it's just me, but I don't know if I want "The Dragon" programming me.  What if you don't play the same way he does?  Like, how about if you have a soft 17 and you want to stand -- but "The Dragon" says to double down?  It might get ugly.
 – Don't forget to check back tonight at 11:00 PM Eastern Time for the $35 million winning numbers.  BigGameLottery.com is the only site to bring you the results LIVE!

 – As a reminder, the $46 million Big Game jackpot from the drawing on Friday, June 9 remains unclaimed.  The winning ticket was purchased in New Jersey.

Saturday, August 26, 2000

 – There was no jackpot-winning ticket sold for the Friday drawing, but five lucky players won a $150,000 prize by matching the first five numbers: 1 in New Jersey, 1 in Georgia, 2 in Illinois, and 1 in Michigan.  For the complete rundown of winners by prize category, click over to the Winning Combinations page.

 – We've got more new feature news for you today.  We added a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section that we hope answers many of the questions we receive often.  New questions & answers will be added on an ongoing basis.  Thanks to reader Anthony Powell for the suggestion.
 – We have added a new feature to BigGameLottery.com: now you can perform text searches across the site.  To access the new search feature, click Search at the top of any page.  If you need help using the service, you can click over to the Search Tips page.  The Search Tips page will also show you how to perform advanced searches, such as wildcards, included and excluded text, phrases, and field searches.
 – Don't forget to buy your Big Game tickets today before 10:45 PM Eastern Time to get in on the $31 million jackpot.  We'll present the winning numbers as they are drawn tonight at 11:00 PM Eastern Time!
Right on the heels of the Publishers Clearing House multi-million dollar settlement, Time Inc. agreed to refund $4.9 million to customers nationwide as a result of deceptive sweepstakes practices.

 – It always nice to see ordinary, deserving people win a big jackpot.  Such is the case of John Welsh, a bus driver who won the $30 million New York Lotto.

Wednesday, August 23, 2000

 – Here are two more articles outlining details behind the Publishers Clearing House settlement.  The first article provides some of the specific provisions of the agreement and the fees PCH is required to pay.  The second article provides some additional details and perspective, including a list of the states participating in the settlement, and the Arkansas Attorney General's view that the sanctions imposed on PCH should be even stronger.
 – There was no jackpot winner in the Tuesday drawing but four lucky players matched the first five numbers for $150,000: 2 in New Jersey and 2 in Michigan.  See the Winning Combinations page for the complete rundown of winners by prize category.

 – Today, Nita Colla of San Francisco claimed the largest jackpot ever awarded to an individual by the California lottery -- $88 million.  Mrs. Colla elected to take the winnings in one lump sum, which amounts to a staggering $42,898,388 before taxes.
Publishers Clearing House has reached a comprehensive agreement with 23 state Attorneys Gereral, resolving disputes over the company's misleading promotions.  Keeping in mind that the linked story is a press release published by PCH, you'll have to take their positive spin with a grain of salt.
 – Here's a story about a lucky Michigan man who won a $150,000 prize in the August 11 Big Game drawing.  Included in the story is the location where the winning ticket was purchased.  As a side note, it seems that all of these winners I read about find out that they're winners by going back to the store, or by reading a newspaper, etc.  I'm still waiting for the first story that quotes the winner saying that he found the winning numbers on the internet at BigGamelottery.com!
Don't forget to check back tonight at 11:00 PM Eastern Time for the LIVE Big Game drawing results.

 – Ever wonder who won that $73 million Big Game jackpot in July?  Susanna D. Correia of East Freetown, Massachusetts won the big prize, and elected to take her winnings in one lump sum.  That's a sweet $38,020,809, reduced to $25,473,942.03 after taxes.  I could live with that.
