Lottery News for July, 2000

Monday, July 31, 2000

 – Six days before the Big Game Lottery $73 million jackpot drawing, the Florida Lottery had a $65 million jackpot winner.  It turns out that the winner was actually a 26-member lottery group, who today chartered a bus to claim their winnings at lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.
Don't forget to sign up for our free Jackpot Alert service, which will automatically send you an e-mail when the Big Game Lottery jackpot reaches the amount you specify.
 – The Michigan Lottery has posted four brief articles about recent $150,000 winners (story 1, story 2, story 3, and story 4).  For Michigan Big Game Lottery players, each story gives the location where the winning ticket was purchased.
 – With the hightened populatrity of lottery games, it's inevitable that there's going to be plenty of con artists who try to take advantage.  The Florida Lottery just announced a new public awareness campaign to alert people to these schemes, which prey mainly on the elderly.  Be sure to read the press release, as it contains some good tips on how to spot the frauds.

 – The Big Game Lottery jackpot is officially the largest jackpot in the nation!  A winning ticket hasn't been sold since June 9th when a New Jersey player won $46 million – which to date remains unclaimed.
You never know what's going to get someone to play a slot machine in a casino.  Such is the case with the new Addam's Family video slots.  I didn't think the Addam's Family was still such a hot franchise, but according to IGT Vice President Ward Chilton, "We believe it's going to be one of the most popular products we've ever introduced – right up there with Wheel of Fortune®."

 – This story from the Virginia Lottery, although a bit over-dramatic, paints a nice picture of what the $73 million jackpot would do for you.  It's good that they mention that "we encourage everyone to play responsibly," because in my book you should always wait until the jackpot is at least $100 million before you play irresponsibly.  (OK, it's been a long day.)
According to Richard Renucci of Ionia, Michigan, you should always remember to check the lottery tickets you bought while on vacation.  I wonder if he looked up the winning numbers on the BigGameLottery.com Prior Results page.
 – The Big Game Lottery jackpot continues to grow larger, this time increasing by $11 million to a total of $73 million!  There were seven lucky $150,000 winners -- 3 in New Jersey, 2 in Illinois, 1 in Georgia, and 1 in Maryland.  See the Winning Combinations page for the complete rundown of winning tickets.

 – It's a little late, but thank goodness the House of Reps had enough sense to reject the bill to prohibit Internet gambling.  This article gives some insight into the ramifications and future bills targeted at the online gaming industry.  I think where the article misses the point however, is that the reason the internet is so popular is that we are free to vote for ourselves -- with our mouse clicks -- on what we want to do and see.  It's not that I have ever used an online casino -- I haven't -- but I certainly don't want someone in Congress deciding where I spend my money online.  You can believe that once Congress starts banning internet content and activities, they'll never turn back.

 – Just a quick note to those who like to keep up to date with the latest internet browser software.  You can now download Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, which is more of a refinement than a radical new version.  If you're a Netscape user, we'll let you know when version 6 becomes available; in the meantime you can upgrade to the latest version.

 – The news continues to swirl around the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act.  I urge you to fully understand what's at stake here (sorry about the pun), because the bill is very wide-sweeping, and will affect your internet usage for a long time.  Also, if the bill passes, it will certainly pave the way for the adoption of other restictive internet laws.  Although laws are mainly written by lawyers and are sometimes difficult to decipher, the text of the entire bill can be read online.

If you have not already done so, you can express your disapproval of this bill by sending a letter to your representatives.

Thursday, July 13, 2000

 – Just a reminder to our readers who can buy Florida lottery tickets: the drawing this Saturday at 11:00 PM EDT is worth $40 million (the same as the Friday Big Game Lottery jackpot).

 – If you value your freedom to conduct gaming over the internet you'd better take notice.  The Internet Gambling Bill is getting even tougher, thanks to the Commerce subcommittee in Congress.  If you're interested in voicing your opposition to the bill, go to http://www.capweb.net/iccc to automatically send a short mail to your state lawmakers telling them to protect the freedom of the internet.

 – There was no jackpot winner in the Tuesday drawing, so the jackpot is now $30 million.
Four people won the $150,000 prize; the winning tickets were sold in Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Michigan.  Go to the Winning Combinations page to see the complete list of winners.
