Alert: Once again, certain politicians are attempting to limit your freedoms on the Internet! This time, though, it is even worse -- they are deceptively (and unscrupulously) using a much-needed anti-terrorist bill to try to slip some of their personal agenda through "undetected". Specifically, the bill's sponsors, Rep. John J. LaFalce (D-N.Y.) and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Michael G. Oxley (R-Ohio), tacked on a provision that would make it illegal for any Internet gambling site to accept money through credit cards, checks, or wire transfers. Click here to read the full text of the bill (you need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it) After reading the bill you'll scratch your head wondering what the heck the Internet gambling portion has to do with it. The rest of the bill contains a lot of terrific provisions to help the United States track terrorists' money around the globe and help our various agencies cooperate and share information. This is all much-needed in order to fight terrorism. Then, the very last part of the bill takes a left turn and throws in some garbage about Internet gambling. These politicians are using the urgency required by the recent attacks to rush through their own personal agendas. This is the worst kind of deception, because it preys on our country's need to pass an anti-terrorism bill quickly. (At this point, what politician would hold up an anti-terrorism bill by arguing over the details?) I urge you to contact your senators and your representatives immediately, and tell them that the bill must be changed to remove the anti-Internet gambling portion before it goes to a vote. This really has nothing to do with whether or not you (or they) agree with Internet gambling -- it has to do with eroding ANY PART of your freedoms on the Internet. They will listen if enough people let them know, and every voice counts!
