 – Million-dollar ticket fight goes before Mass. Lottery board.  In the opening round of what may be a lengthy legal battle, an 83-year-old local man who found a winning Massachusetts lottery ticket in a trash bin defended his right to the $1 million prize yesterday, fending off a rival claim.

 – Some Oklahomans baffled by new Pick 3 lottery game.  A manager of a local convenience store shared his insight on the start-up of the state lottery's scratch-off games versus the Pick 3 game which started earlier this month: People can't figure the Pick 3 out, he said.
 – Central Islip lottery winner feeling grand.  A Central Islip, New York, man said he will use most of his first payment from his $1 million jackpot prize to pay off $25,000 in charge card bills this week.
 – Uncle Sam Wins Your Lottery.  Attention, lottery players: If you win a nice big prize, opt to take it as a stream of payments and then change your mind and wish you had taken it as a lump sum, don't expect any special tax benefits if you sell your annuity for immediate cash.
 – Number 13 'officially' unlucky in UK Lottery.  The number 13 has traditionally been considered to be unlucky by people, and now the UK's National Lottery chiefs have revealed that the number does in fact happen to be the unluckiest for Lotto players as it is least likely to be picked in the main draw.
Court may shut down Mega Millions in California.  The California Lottery and an anti-gambling group are set to argue in Sacramento court whether to halt Mega Millions in California as a judge weighs claims by the group and Democratic legislators that voters permitted a lottery only within California.

 – Father, son feud over lottery winnings.  What first appeared to be the quintessential modern American fairy tale has turned into the archetypal American family feud, as a 45-year-old manicurist filed a lawsuit, saying his 21-year-old son tricked him into turning over a winning lottery ticket worth $1 million, and then tried to steal the winnings.
 – Lucky Break: Co-workers win lottery.  Pooling resources can sometimes pay off in a big way -- just ask the 14 co-workers at United Plastics Corp. in Mount Airy, North Carolina, who won $250,000 in the Nov. 15 Mega Millions drawing by matching five of six numbers.
 – Scientific Games appeals N.J. Lottery's award to GTECH.  Overbid by nearly $32 million in its unsuccessful attempt to get the state's lottery contract, Scientific Games filed a protest Tuesday claiming officials skewed the bid proposals to keep its current operator.

 – Ex-legislator seeks to lead Texas Lottery.  Talmadge Heflin, a once-powerful state legislator defeated last year by a political newcomer in a House race decided by 16 votes, has applied to become the Texas Lottery's next executive director.
 – New N.C. Lottery chief says integrity of games is important.  Chosen amid an ethical scandal involving lottery commissioners, the man picked yesterday as executive director of North Carolina's new lottery wasted no time promising games that will be run honorably, with low-key advertising.
 – $315M Mega Millions lottery winners stay on the job.  A secretary and six laboratory workers at Kaiser Permanente in California held the winning ticket for the $315 million Mega Millions jackpot -- but they still came in to work, a company spokeswoman said.

Lottery mum on naming of new director.  North Carolina lottery Chairman Charles Sanders said in an interview that he would not deny or confirm that New Mexico's Tom Shaheen is the choice to start up the state's lottery games, which are expected to generate $400 million a year for education initiatives.
Texas lottery officials concerned about sale of GTECH.  The Rhode Island company that operates many of the Texas lottery's most popular games is up for sale, and state officials are looking to hire an independent law firm to help them ensure that any potential buyer is committed to upholding the company's contractual commitments.

 – Texas lawmakers hear allegations about lottery disaster site.  The Texas Lottery Commission would not be able to resume critical functions in a timely manner if its headquarters were destroyed because its disaster recovery site lacks important equipment, a former lottery employee told lawmakers Monday.
 – Third N.C. Lottery commissioner resigns.  Another member of the North Carolina State Lottery Commission has resigned, saying a potential conflict of interest has made it difficult for him to contribute to the panel.

N.C. Gov. says lottery can overcome setbacks.  North Carolina Governor Mike Easley says he thinks North Carolina's new and beleaguered lottery can overcome recent setbacks that led to a criminal investigation over alleged lobbying violations.
 – N.C. Lottery ticket plan may kill video poker.  One of North Carolina's top lawmakers Friday called for banning the sale of lottery tickets at businesses with video poker machines, a ban one operator said would effectively kill the video poker business.
 – Texas Lottery worker is fired after e-mail.  The Texas lottery fired a senior systems analyst on Friday, hours after a newspaper reported that he had sent a scathing e-mail to two state lawmakers claiming that the agency misled the Legislature about an emergency control center that he says doesn't work.

 – Thieves uncover hole in Okla. lottery planning.  A flaw in security allowed thieves to steal lottery tickets from an Oklahoma store and redeem them before lottery officials could deactivate the ticket identification codes.
 – Texas Lottery will guarantee advertised jackpots.  The Texas Lottery Commission approved guaranteed Lotto Texas jackpots Monday, a measure designed to win back player confidence and avoid more inflated prize estimates by the nation's third-largest lottery.
Rumors of minor’s lottery buy unfounded.  Oregon lottery officials said Monday there's no truth to reports that they're investigating whether a 17-year-old bought a $340 million Powerball lottery ticket believed to belong to a Medford family.
