7 proves lucky number in D.C. Lottery.  Seven was the lucky number for about 550 D.C. Lottery players, who picked 7-7-7-7 in the D.C. Four game, racking up winnings totaling nearly $1.2 million and beating the one-in-10,000 odds.
May sales come close to lottery record.  May was the second highest sales month in West Virginia state lottery history, topped only by August 2001, when sales were boosted by a $295 million Powerball jackpot, the Lottery Commission learned this week.
N.C. House speaker ready to move on lottery.  North Carolina House Speaker Jim Black said Wednesday he probably will bring up legislation for a state lottery referendum in two weeks, and at least two key votes appear to be shifting his way.

Happy ending to sad lottery tale.  Charity bosses today owed a final vote of thanks to lottery millionaire Phil Kitchen after his 17th century pad was sold for a staggering £920,000.
Woman loses thousands in lottery scam.  An 84-year-old Venice, Florida woman recently lost more than $14,000 to scam artists, according to Venice police.

 – Hard-hit UK lottery could be nationalized.  The UK National Lottery could be taken over by the Government in response to a slump in ticket sales.  More: Jubilee and football blamed for low sales of lottery.
Lottery winners pack up, vanish.  On their first day as millionaires, Myrtle and John Connell said goodbye to their Clifton, New Jersey neighbors, packed up their modest home on Merselis Avenue, and disappeared.
S.C. man wins first Carolina 5 jackpot.  Cyril Randolph Bamberg of Columbia, South Carolina picked the five winning numbers in last Friday's first drawing of the S.C. Lottery's newest game, Carolina 5.  His ticket beat out about 700,000 others to take the prize.
Man dubbed luckiest in Britain after winning Lotto and racing bet.  Les Carvell is being called the luckiest man in Britain after winning £1.1m on the National Lottery and now scooping a further £74,500 on the horses.

Church leaders denounce proposal for N.C. lottery.  Condemning a North Carolina state lottery for placing an unfair burden on the poor and for advertising that leads people to gamble, leaders of the state's Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran and Catholic churches joined yesterday to voice opposition to a lottery.  More: NC religious leaders say lottery opposition will be strong.
Big Ticket lottery about to be axed.  Ontario Attorney-General David Young is poised to do away with a high-end government lottery that featured luxury prizes, after complaints it was sucking charity dollars from other organizations.
N.J. couple claim $45.8 million Pick 6 jackpot.  A couple from Passaic County, New Jersey came forward to claim the $45.8 million jackpot from the Pick 6 Lotto drawing held on Monday, June 3.  The jackpot is the third largest awarded in Pick 6 Lotto history.
Camelot may have to share UK lottery rights.  Camelot faces losing exclusive control of the UK National Lottery under sweeping reforms to be considered by Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture.  She is expected to unveil proposals in the House of Commons this week for a major overhaul of the rules governing the game and powers of its regulator, the National Lottery Commission.

 – Five winning tickets in $70 million TX Lotto.  Five winning tickets were sold for Saturday night's $70 million jackpot, the Texas Lottery Commission said.  The winning tickets were sold in Austin, Pearland, Sherman, Longview and Terrell, a lottery spokeswoman said.  Four of the five tickets were bought Saturday.  The winning numbers were 2, 11, 13, 16, 26 and 34.
Powerball tickets go on sale Thursday in Pennsylvania.  About 6,000 lottery vendors, including convenience and grocery stores, are to begin selling Powerball tickets at 5 a.m. Thursday in hopes of drawing the hordes of Pennsylvanians who previously traveled to Delaware and West Virginia to buy the tickets.
Black: It's time to tackle lottery.  In North Carolina, the governor is still pushing for a lottery and House members are worried about using one-time money to balance the state budget, and House Speaker Jim Black says he'll bring a lottery to a vote in the House in the next two weeks.
Man offered holiday after lottery publishes wrong numbers.  A man who thought he had become a millionaire on the Dutch lottery has found out officials published the wrong numbers.
Kentucky couple wins $14 million.  A western Kentucky couple claimed the $14 million Powerball jackpot yesterday after learning a day after the drawing that they had purchased the winning ticket.
Virginia State Lottery Selects Contact Center Solution.  HigherGround, a pioneer and provider of customer interaction recording and telecom management solutions for the contact center industry, today announced the Virginia State Lottery has chosen the HigherGround Mentor, a recording and monitoring solution to facilitate outbound sales, improve field service dispatch operations, as well as impact overall quality management in two of its facilities in Richmond, VA.
N.Y. Lottery gives 151 graduates $4,000 scholarship.  The New York Lottery officially recognized 151 graduating high school seniors from the Hudson Valley area who will earn a four-year, $4,000 Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the lottery.
D.C. Lottery Picks a 'Lucky Dog'.  Rocky, a 2-year-old midnight black mix of Lab and border collie, charmed a panel of judges at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Woodley Park with his winsome stare yesterday and was picked to become the mascot for the D.C. Lottery, beating back competition from 22 other canines.

Out-of-state lottery ads draw criticism.  Members of the South Carolina film industry hoped to see the benefits of the new state lottery by making commercials for the games, but instead they say the work goes to out-of-state companies.
New web presence for National Lottery.  The UK National Lottery has launched its new Web site as the first phase of the roll-out of its interactive strategy which is costing Camelot £45m.
Andrew N.S. Glazer: Cash conversion causes confusion.  Should U.S. residents convert their U.S. dollars into Canadian currency and back again each time they visit a Canadian casino?

 – First month is a winner for lottery.  Ohio's first month in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery has been a success, as Ohioans are spending about 21 percent more for jackpot lottery tickets than the Ohio jackpot did alone in the previous month.
Editorial: Keep on dreaming.  Thoughts of winning the lottery multiply when the pot gets big.
Free Mega Millions tickets in Atlantic City.  Starting on June 21 and running through Sept. 8, 2002, the Tropicana in Atlantic City, New Jersey will give its customers the chance to win up to 15,000 Mega Millions tickets, five times each day.

 – Web Gambling Ban Clears House Committee.  The pathetic and controversial effort to ban Internet gambling cleared a House committee Tuesday, despite opposition from lawmakers who said it contained too many loopholes and those who said it imposed too many restrictions.  More: Net Gambling Debate Rages.
Carolina 5 ups lottery ante.  Armed with promotional T-shirts, hats and key chains as well as popcorn and fruit punch, South Carolina lottery officials were doing their part to stir excitement over the lottery's newest game and the best chance yet for players to cash in.
Appeals court upholds lottery lawsuit dismissal.  A federal appeals court has upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of West Virginia's video lottery law.
China to tighten supervision of lottery market.  The Ministry of Finance announced Monday that it would tighten supervision over the country's lottery market in the coming months to maintain fair market order.
Mystery winner shares luck with five charities.  Donations totalling NT$5 million from an anonymous lottery winner were handed over yesterday to five charitable organizations, the first publicized donation by a winner since the Public Welfare Lottery was launched in January.

Lottery Shops Threat.  Shopkeepers who fail to sell enough UK National Lotto tickets will lose their terminals from next month, operator Camelot has said.  Some 25,000 retailers have a Lotto terminal, with most having a target of selling tickets worth at least £1,500 every week.

 – S.C. Lottery Launches $100,000 Game.  South Carolina's six-month old lottery will launch its first big-jackpot numbers game today, as tickets for the new Carolina 5 go on sale.  More: S.C. set for new lottery game.
Citibank to Block Online Gambling.  Citibank, the nation's largest credit card issuer, has agreed to block all online gambling transactions that use its credit cards, the New York attorney general said Friday.
Lottery win divides town.  A $20 million Australian Powerball win has split the Victorian town of Kilmore, with tensions arising between the winners and some of their workmates who missed out.

N.C. Senate bill would attempt to collect lottery money from other states.  North Carolina would get some revenues generated by lottery ticket sales in three other states under a bill filed Wednesday in the state Senate.  The bill filed by Sen. Allen Wellons, D-Johnston, attempts to collect proceeds of tickets bought by North Carolinians in Georgia, Virginia and South Carolina.  In exchange, North Carolina would agree not to establish a lottery for five years.
Panel reverses, OKs Lottery Board pick.  A Senate panel reversed itself Wednesday and recommended confirmation of a St. Mary Parish politician Gov. Mike Foster wants on the Louisiana Lottery Board.
Lottery re-emerges in Alabama governor's race.  According to a recent poll from the Mobile Register and the University of South Alabama, of the 436 people surveyed, 52 percent said they support a Alabama state lottery, with 75 percent saying they would support a lottery to exclusively benefit education.
Swedes Go For Gambling Online.  The Swedish Parliament has voted in favor of allowing the following I-gambling activities: lotteries, bingo, and casino games.
Georgia Lottery Sales Exceed Previous Record.  With almost three (3) weeks remaining in the 2002 fiscal year the Georgia Lottery Corporation (GLC) announced they have already surpassed their highest fiscal year sales total in history.
Wisconsin traces phone scams to Canada.  Wisconsin residents have lost more than $1 million in the last five years in lottery scams from Canada, authorities said Monday after filing charges against several companies.
Lotto South ticket sold in Savannah worth $21 million.  One ticket sold in Savannah matched six numbers to win the $21 million Lotto South jackpot, Virginia Lottery officials said Thursday.
Lottery says Club Keno off to strong start.  The numbers are looking good for Missouri's new Club Keno lottery game.
Online Gambling Ban Effort Slows.  The misguided and illogical effort to ban Internet-based gambling was slowed Thursday by opponents who said the bill would hurt dog tracks, intrude on people's private lives and lead to excessive regulation of the global computer network.

 – A quart of milk, a loaf of bread, a $45.8 million lottery ticket....  A convenience store in the Lakeview section of Clifton, New Jersey made one of its customers $45.8 million wealthier after selling a winning Pick-6 lottery ticket that hit the third-largest jackpot in the game's history, lottery officials said Tuesday.

Couple find lottery ticket worth $1 million.  A Canadian couple discovered the winning ticket while spring cleaning, seven months after buying it.
Last Illinois Big Game Winner Claims $13 Million Prize.  When Chicago resident Edgar Diaz played the Big Game recently, he just hoped to win a little something.  On April 26, his wildest dreams came true when he became the sole winner of the Big Game grand prize worth $13 million.

N.C. lottery legislation filed.  North Carolina Sen. Tony Rand, D-Cumberland, a longtime lottery supporter and political ally of Gov. Mike Easley, filed legislation Thursday to amend the state constitution regarding a lottery.
Lottery hearing delayed at least two weeks.  Yet another delay is prolonging the Pennsylvania State Lottery advertising contract controversy.  A long-awaited hearing -- key to whether the three-year, $90 million contract will move to MARC USA, which was awarded the account more than three months ago, or remain with incumbent, Tierney Communications, Philadelphia -- stopped Wednesday in the middle of testimony.  The hearing won't resume for more than two weeks.
Contract awarded to design W. Va. Lottery headquarters.  The West Virginia Lottery Commission has awarded a $747,600 contract to a Charleston architectural firm for design services for a new $10 million headquarters.
S.C. lottery-ticket sales banned during elections.  South Carolina lottery players will be out of luck if they're hoping to buy lottery tickets next Tuesday.
Powerball Tickets On Sale in Pennsylvania June 27.  Pennsylvania will become the 23rd jurisdiction to participate in the multi-state jackpot lotto game, Powerball, when tickets for the game go on sale throughout the Commonwealth beginning at 5 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002.
Lottery fever? We'd work if we won.  Only 28 percent of Americans say they would quit their jobs if they won a large enough amount of money in the lottery; 70 percent would go right on working.

 – Lottery poster boy 'Bubba' back to pick on N.C. audiences.  The fictional redneck who spread his pro-lottery message to South Carolinians before they elected Jim Hodges as governor in 1998 and later approved the S.C. Education Lottery in 2000 is returning to the television screen in North Carolina.
Mega Millions sales exceeding expectations.  The new multistate Mega Millions lottery is taking in 50 percent more money than state officials expected and hasn't cut into New York's flagship Lotto game, the NY Division of Lottery said Tuesday.
NJ office co-workers share $150,000 Big Game prize.  A man from Morris Township, New Jersey and his co-worker from California won the second prize of $150,000 in April 16th Big Game drawing worth $331 million.
Chancellor: HOPE scholarships draining GA lottery coffers.  The HOPE scholarship is draining Georgia lottery funds and soon will need cash from the state's general fund, Georgia's higher education chief warned Tuesday.

People Magazine: After the Jackpot.  Shock, elation and phone calls from long-lost cousin Ed: Lottery winners tell how they coped with windfall wealth.
$1 million winner is back at work.  The catchy lottery jingle says "If I had a million dollars. . . I'd be rich" - but after "Survivor" winner Vecepia Towery snagged the big-bucks prize last month she went back to work.
Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Group Wins $175,000 Mega Millions Prize.  A group of 15 co-workers and one retiree from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Baltimore became the Maryland Lottery's first Mega Millions second-tier winners.
GOP Foes Take Up Siegelman's Gamble on Lottery.  Every other major candidate in this year's race for governor of Alabama has come out against Democrat Donald Siegelman's lottery plan, including his Democratic primary challenger, state Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bishop.

Hodges OKs lottery measure.  South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges signed off Monday on a lottery spending plan, despite the fact that the measure failed to provide free tuition to technical schools as he envisioned.

Alabama gubernatorial hopeful stumps on lottery.  Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, the Democrat whom each of the three Republicans hopes to challenge in November, continues to push his lottery plan to boost funding for public education.
Appeals court rules city can't tax lottery prize.  A former Euclid couple who won nearly $3.6 million in the Ohio Lottery have recaptured a share claimed by the city.
