 – Young man's Big Game lottery windfall has peers contemplating uses.  Thaddeus Coats is Michigan's newest multimillionaire.  The 20-year-old from Inkster slipped quietly into Michigan's Lottery offices Thursday to turn in his ticket and claim the $80 million Big Game prize ($43.9 million after taxes).  More: What he plans to do with the Big Game jackpot.
Massachusetts leaders dismiss lottery changes.  Legislators who oversee the Massachusetts state lottery yesterday dismissed a proposal to reduce prize payments as too risky, warning that it could drive away players and ultimately generate less revenue for cities and towns.
Ultimate lottery fantasies.  It's the ultimate American Dream -- winning the lottery and living happily ever after with loads of loot.
Deaf and dumb lottery winner has ticket stolen.  A deaf and dumb lottery winner had his ticket stolen by a man who befriended him, say police.
Defiant lottery winner refuses to fork over cash.  Wearing a sweatshirt, baggy pants and Nikes, Massachusetts lottery winner Mackey Brown arrived at bankruptcy court with his 4-year-old son in tow -- only to be told that Judge Karen Jennemann was about to hold him in contempt for not turning over $63,000 from his annual lottery winnings.
States find sustaining lottery income difficult.  South Carolina lawmakers are set to begin debating -- perhaps as early as this week -- how to divvy up profits, estimated between $194 million and $210 million, from the lottery's first 18 months of operation.  Legislative leaders predict that most will go toward a scholarship program fashioned after Georgia's.  But there's something else to learn from the Georgia lottery: Ticket sales and profits aren't necessarily stable.
Powerball Could Come to Maryland, But Credit Cards Are Out.  A bill that could bring the Powerball lottery game to Maryland won a state Senate committee's approval Thursday.

Michigan Man Claims $80 Million Big Game Prize.  Thaddeus Coats was the sole winner in the Jan. 11 Big Game drawing. The winning numbers for that drawing were: 4, 5, 21, 24, 38 and the Big Money Ball number was 21.  Coats will collect a lump-sum payment estimated at $43.9 million, accord to the Michigan Lottery Commission.
Lottery a prescription for joy.  Five Fort Worth, Texas pharmacy workers will share the $36 million jackpot from the Dec. 26 Texas Lotto drawing.
Swift eyes new lottery fund-sharing plan.  Faced with shrinking revenues and loath to raise taxes, Massachusetts Acting Governor Jane Swift is seriously considering a proposal to give more money from the state lottery to cities and towns and hand out less in prizes.  More: Swift May Change Lottery Payout Format.
Texas Indian Tribe Must Close Casino.  A federal appeals court Thursday ordered the Tigua Indians to shut down their casino, agreeing with state prosecutors that it violates Texas law.
Lottery fails to account for promotional sports tickets.  Hundreds of tickets to professional and college sporting events provided to the Missouri Lottery Commission were unaccounted for, according to a new state audit.
Lottery plan draws skeptics.  Washington Gov. Gary Locke's plan to revitalize the economy by feeding a portion of state lottery proceeds into college campus building projects drew skepticism from House Republicans Wednesday.
Court Rules in Favor of California Lottery in Scratchers Lawsuit.  The California Lottery announced today its reaction to Judge Ron Robie's decision to deny plaintiff's request for a writ of mandate.

 – Gambling foes go Big Game hunting.  David Zanotti, the man who twice helped kill casino gambling in Ohio, was at home yesterday as he took aim at the Ohio Lottery.
Alberta teams gambling on lottery revenue.  The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames celebrated the launch of a province-wide hockey lottery Wednesday, downplaying the fact that the new revenue won't cover the salary of a single player.
Detroit casino revenue hits $1 billion.  Gamblers lost more than $1 billion at Detroit's three casinos last year for the first time ever, according to figures released Monday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
Atlantic City casinos extend winning streak.  Defying predictions of the first yearly revenue decrease in the history of New Jersey casino gambling, Atlantic City's 12 casinos put together a strong finish to 2001 and managed to keep intact a 23-year streak of winning more from gamblers each year than the last, if just barely.

 – Ohio lottery opponents sue to stop multistate game.  Church groups and anti-gambling activists sued the state Tuesday over its decision to join a multistate lottery game such as Powerball or the Big Game, arguing that such a game would violate the Ohio Constitution.
Lottery money flowing to S.C..  The day South Carolina started selling lottery tickets, Gov. Jim Hodges traveled to Fort Mill to invite North Carolinians to come play.  Plenty did, judging from weekly sales estimates released Monday by lottery officials.
Taiwan launches first computerized lottery.  Recession-hit Taiwan launched its first computerised lottery on Wednesday, drawing keen interest from top business executives to office workers hoping to hit the multi-million dollar jackpot.

Lottery's First-Week Sales: $19 Million.  The South Carolina lottery sold more than $19 million worth of tickets in its first week of operation, according to estimates provided by the state lottery commission on Monday.
N.C. scratching its lottery itch in S.C..  As the South Carolina lottery made its long-awaited debut a week ago, it came as little surprise to gaming proponents in North Carolina that one of the first big winners was from their side of the border.
Georgia family claims $26 million Lotto South jackpot.  A Dalton, Georgia family was introduced Monday as the winners of last week's record $26 million Lotto South jackpot.
Tribe moves to shut down Detroit casinos.  Detroit's billion-dollar casino industry was in legal limbo this morning, as a Michigan Indian tribe launched an effort to shut down all three of the city's gaming properties.

 – Ohio Lottery favors joining The Big Game.  With Ohio largely surrounded by Powerball states, Ohio Lottery Commission officials appear to be leaning toward joining the Big Game multi-state lottery.
$80 million winning Big Game ticket sold in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.  The Michigan Lottery is anxiously waiting to hear from the lucky individual holding the $80 million jackpot-winning ticket from the Friday, January 11, 2002 Big Game drawing.
New Jersey couple claims $53 million Big Game jackpot.  A couple from Bayonne, Hudson County, New Jersey came forward Wednesday to claim the $53 million Big Game jackpot for the drawing held on Tuesday, October 16, 2001.
Lottery Lawsuit to Be Dismissed; Appeal Is Planned.  A Sacramento judge said Friday that he planned to dismiss a lawsuit that exposed the California Lottery's sales of tickets after the top prizes were dispensed.
Laid-Off Worker Wins $27,000 On Lottery Ticket.  Good fortune couldn't have come at a better time when Greg Coleman scratched off a "27th anniversary celebration ticket" on Wednesday and won $27,000.
Lottery Sales Figures Elusive.  The South Carolina lottery is finding it easy to tally how many winning tickets it has sold, but a difficult time adding up total sales figures.
Lottery ripoff: Man alters ticket.  The South Carolina Education Lottery is not even a week old and already Georgetown Police are investigating an alleged case of tampering with a game card.
Governor hopeful accuses Arizona Lottery of fraud.  Arizona gubernatorial candidate Richard Mahoney has accused the Arizona Lottery of defrauding the public by selling scratch game tickets after all the games' grand prizes have been claimed.

Michigan resident stunned by $150,000 Big Game win.  Daniel Rodgers of Gulliver, Michigan could hardly believe his eyes when he looked at his Big Game ticket and saw that he had matched the first five numbers in the Christmas Day Big Game drawing to win a $150,000 Big Game prize.
Texas, Tiguas dissect law in casino hearing.  Texas and the Tigua tribe laid out their views on the legality of the tribe's Speaking Rock Casino before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday.
