State constitutional changes challenged.  A Eugene, Oregon woman whose brother was addicted to video poker filed suit in Marion County Circuit Court Tuesday to eliminate the Oregon Lottery.

 – Commission prepares for lottery launch.  Even with much of the groundwork remaining, the chairman of the South Carolina Lottery Commission said Thursday a lottery should be operational, as planned, by Nov. 1.
Ohio Lottery sales woes likely worst in country.  The $230 million plunge in the Ohio Lottery's sales during the recent fiscal year is almost certain to be the most severe decline for any lottery in the nation in 2001.
US Virgin Islands may trump Las Vegas on on-line gambling.  A number of its Caribbean neighbors are home to international Internet gambling operations, and until now the US Virgin Islands have been barred from following suit.
Casino ATMs out of luck if Congress backs new bill.  Rep. John LaFalce, D-N.Y., will introduce a bill as early as this week to prohibit ATMs and credit card swiping devices from casino floors, close proximity to race track windows and anyplace else people bet.  Is this why we elect representatives?

 – New Jersey Lottery Is Looking For More 'Missing' Winners.  The New Jersey State Lottery yesterday announced that it has recently launched a special Unclaimed Jackpots link (www.state.nj.us/lottery/jackpotrem.htm) that will provide detailed information about outstanding winning tickets, including the game, drawing date, prize amount, agent location and expiration date.
Deciding Where to Play: Vegas or Online?.  Nevada legalized gambling in 1931, and since that time, the state has been a popular destination for gamblers and thrill-seekers alike.  But even with its star-studded shows, rooftop roller coasters, and all-you-can-eat buffets, can Las Vegas casinos still compete with its online counterparts?
What Happened to In-Flight Gambling?.  As reported by MSNBC: "...The headline above a story in the Wall Street Journal didn't hedge any bets: In-Flight Gambling Is Ready to Take Off."  That appeared May 24, 1996.
Colorado residents will get a chance to buy Powerball lottery tickets on August 2, nearly a month earlier than expected.  Colorado Lottery Executive Director Mark Zamarripa announced Thursday that ticket sales would begin ahead of schedule for a Powerball drawing on Aug. 4.  Proceeds from the sale of Colorado Powerball tickets will go to the Lottery's current proceeds recipients: the Conservation Trust Fund, State Parks, and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Trust Fund.  If the GOCO fund exceeds its cap of about $44 million, spillover will be directed to public schools to address health and safety issues.

 – Legislators approve more than a budget.  A Tennessee state lottery, popular with an overwhelming majority of the state's residents, appears just over the horizon, with voters scheduled to cast ballots in November 2002 on whether to change the Constitution to permit the state to start one.
 – 1993 Lottery Jackpot Winner Finally Grants Interview.  Fond du Lac's Les Robins won the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history in 1993, but hasn't granted an interview since.
China to Launch Olympic Lottery.  China plans to launch a special lottery to help finance the 2008 Summer Olympics, an official said on Tuesday.
Commissioners Get 'Lottery 101'.  South Carolina Lottery commissioners got to work on Last Week, discussing advertising bids, instant-game vendors and picking a staff to oversee the day-to-day operations.
Change of venue sought.  Colorado is set to join the 20 other states with powerball later this year, after voters approved the idea last year, but a lawsuit -- claiming that Powerball in Colorado is illegal -- could threaten that plan.
Triples in Pennsylvania.  Friday the 13th proved lucky for Pennsylvania Lottery players whose favorite Daily Number is 1-1-1.  The total payout for The Daily Number 1-1-1 drawn Friday, July 13, 2001, of $4,948,925 represents approximately 3.2 times or $3.4 million above the amount that players wagered.  There were 20,261 winners who chose the winning numbers.  Triple 1s have hit a total of nine times since The Daily Number drawing began in March 1977.  The last time 111 was drawn was May 4, 2001.  The last time any triples hit was June 19, 2001, that number being 333.

 – Texas Lottery Revenue Surges by 9.2%.  The Texas lottery is showing its first significant jump in revenue since the mid-1990s, despite predictions from loyal players a year ago that adding numbers to the popular Lotto game would harm sales.
Eight is a Lucky Number.  Most casinos use web addresses based on card combinations or catchy names, but very few use numeric domains.  One exception is 888.com.
Double Lotto fails to yield winner.  Errant balls spilling from the machine just seconds before the live broadcast Saturday night forced two drawings and two sets of winning numbers instead of the usual one.  The first set of winning numbers was drawn from a swirling mix of pingpong ball-size spheres that was two balls shy of a full load.
Georgians praise lottery at meeting in N.C..  In an attempt to increase pressure for a state lottery, Gov. Mike Easley had the director of Georgia's lottery and Georgia's attorney general tell 80 members of the North Carolina state House over breakfast at the governor's mansion yesterday how popular the lottery is in their state.
Anti-lottery group apologizes for errors.  An anti-lottery group that tried this week to link lottery operator GTECH Corp. with an aide and former campaign manager to N.C. Gov. Mike Easley has backed off some of its statements, saying that it made errors in researching possible ties.
