Lottery sales up, but profit misses goal.  Seven months after Ohio joined with eight other states to create the new Mega Millions game, Ohio Lottery sales have risen $43.5 million over the same time period a year earlier.  But even with the 4 percent sales increase, the lottery is still $8 million short of its projected profits.
Lawmakers divided on proper age for lottery.  North Dakota lawmakers are divided about whether players of the state's new lottery should be at least 18 or 21 years old.
Lottery jackpot could go to hospitals.  As the Jan. 9 deadline approaches for the person who bought the $9 million lottery ticket in July to claim the prize – Texas Lottery Commission's largest unclaimed jackpot – state hospital administrators could be forgiven for crossing their fingers that the winner never comes forward.
Photocopy a winner.  A Calgary judge ordered the Western Canada Lottery Corp. to pay Valerie Murphy more than $100,000, after her winning ticket was stolen from her 18 months ago.  Justice Carolyn Phillips ruled the photocopy Murphy held of a Sept. 27, 2000 The Plus winner was sufficient to claim her prize.

 – S.C. lottery turns 1 year old.  One year later, the South Carolina Lottery has expanded to include more than 30 scratch-off tickets, two instant games and Powerball.  The staff has grown to some 130 people.  And most critics have grown quiet.  More:

Ohio Lottery doubles payouts to ticket agents.  The Ohio Lottery will nearly double the commission it pays instant-ticket retailers in hopes of softening the post-holiday sales slump.
Are lottery winnings acceptable donations?.  Some churches say no thanks to gamblers' gifts.
PA Lottery Awesome Sales Weeks Fuel New Calendar Year Sales Record.  Lottery ticket sales reached $74,375,811 during the week, December 24-30, 2002, making it the second highest weekly sales in the Lottery's nearly 31-year history.

 – Salvation Army Refuses Lotto Donation.  The Salvation Army will not accept a $100,000 donation from a Florida Lotto winner because its local leader didn't want to take money associated with gambling.  More: Some pastors would reject lottery tithe.
Some students pay only $24 tuition with lottery scholarships.  The state Commission on Higher Education is increasing the maximum tuition assistance award funded by the South Carolina Education Lottery, according to officials at Horry-Georgetown Technical College.  More: HGTC says assistance for tuition increasing.
Tennessee lottery expected to cash in on Bama dollars.  When Tennessee starts selling tickets for its education lottery later this year, Alabama merchants on the Tennessee border expect to see lots of cars bypass their stores and head a few blocks north for tickets.
Lottery ticket gives her chance to win $1 million.  By sending in losing Maryland Lottery tickets last year, Maryland lottery players became eligible for up to $1 million this spring in the Maryland Lottery Cash Encounters grand finale in Baltimore.
GTECH loses Wisconsin lottery contract.  Rhode Island-based lottery administration firm GTECH Holdings Corp. said Tuesday that it is reviewing legal options after the state of Wisconsin withdrew a contract worth about $50 million.
Lottery chief aims to cut administrative costs.  The Oregon Lottery's acting director says she's stopping the use of some outside consultants, in an effort to pare administrative costs that have drawn criticism from state auditors.
Pay-out over "illegal lottery" of domain names.  Managers of the ".biz" Internet domain have agreed to pay roughly $1.2 million to settle charges that their system for handing out hot names like www.biggame.biz amounted to an illegal lottery.

Experts: Lottery Site Has Security Risks.  New Jersey Lottery players who sign up for a VIP service offering discounts, bonus games and daily e-mails of winning numbers are risking more than the price of a ticket, Internet security experts warn.  Editor: This story refers to the VIP Service at the official NJ Lottery web site (www.njlottery.net).  We posted a similar story last Thursday, but felt it was worthwhile to repeat the security threat posed by signing up for that service.
Lottery will drop Max 5 game.  Less than a year after its debut, the Hoosier Lottery's Max 5 game is being pulled from stores, a casualty of lackluster sales.
Oregon Lottery's No. 2 director approved perks.  As the Oregon State Lottery's No. 2 director, Lee Moore signed off on many of the free-spending perks that have embarrassed the agency in recent months.  More: Interim Lottery chief to shave administrative costs.

 – 2003 could bring new round in N.C. lottery saga.  The recent Powerball jackpot win in West Virginia could set the table for an issue the North Carolina General Assembly could face again next year - a North Carolina lottery.
Lottery millions mean little to "boring" Hoquiam couple.  Since winning a $93 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot last month, Dick Warren, 70, has spent almost none of his winnings.  He drives the same Ford Explorer.  He rides the same bicycle.  And he still plans to move to a smaller house where he'll no longer have to mow the lawn.
Powerball lottery winner starts handing out the cash.  On Sunday, record Powerball lottery winner Andrew "Jack" Whittaker said he was making good on a promise to give his pastor a $334,000 check, the first installment on the church's share - the traditional 10 percent tithe - of Whittaker's $170 million gross winnings.  More:

Five numbers, one winner, one arrest.  The Keno ticket that should have won Jeff St. George $2,250 traveled by bicycle and automobile, spent the night in a trash bin, and now rests safely at the Dracut Police Department...
New Lottery Game Showing Revenue In Missouri.  Missouri's Club Keno Lottery Game has been operating for only seven months but it's generating big bucks for the state.
Rather see a regular "Jack" win jackpot?.  Admit it.  You felt a little disappointed when the lone winner of the $315 million Powerball Jackpot (cash value $170.5 million) turned out to be a man who is already a multi-millionaire.

Two more in Upstate claim lottery winnings amidst record-setting sales.  Although South Carolina didn't have the big Powerball winner, two tickets worth $100,000 each were sold in the state, one of them in Spartanburg County.
Powerball brings KS some luck.  The largest jackpot in the history of the Powerball multistate lottery game paid off for Kansas as it continues to struggle with financial problems.
Florida Lotto millionaire gives total of $250,000 to charities.  A financial adviser who held one of the four winning tickets in the $100 million Florida Lotto jackpot earlier this month has already started giving some of his new fortune away to charity.
Considering a Lottery in Nevada's Future.  The Governor's Task Force on Tax Policy recently recommended a lottery, which could bring Nevada more than $50 million a year.
$30 million lottery ticket still unclaimed.  One of two winning tickets for a $103 million Powerball jackpot still has not been claimed.
