 – Mega Millions a big winner in N.Y..  The multistate Mega Millions lottery game has been mega-successful, as New Yorkers have paid out more than $127 million in hopes of winning big bucks since May 17.
Millionaire says he funded pro-lottery ad to back education.  A Nashville computer software executive spent $30,000 of his own money on a political TV commercial that parodies an old Saturday Night Live routine to lampoon lottery foes.
Ohio lottery bets on $20 instant tickets.  The Ohio Lottery plans to roll out a $20 instant scratch-off game — the most expensive in state lottery history — for the holidays.
Winning lottery ticket lands man in jail.  A winning lottery ticket allowed police to link Jermaine Spears, 19, of Columbia with an armed robbery at a convenience store early Wednesday, when two men, one of them armed with a handgun, entered the shop and demanded cash.
Casinos set to topple the UK Lottery.  November will mark the eighth birthday of the UK National Lottery, and after the initial flurry of excitement there are signs that the love affair is cooling.
N.M. Lottery boasts $30 million for education.  The New Mexico Lottery announced its sixth straight year of record ticket sales and said it had generated nearly $30 million in profits earmarked for college scholarships.

Lottery's terminals knocked out.  The Ohio Lottery wants SBC Ameritech to reimburse it for a phone problem that knocked out more than 1,200 sales terminals on the eve of last month's $165 million Mega Millions drawing.
DDB protests $125 million Calif. lottery account award.  Omnicom Group's DDB Worldwide, Los Angeles, has officially protested the California State Lottery commission's decision to award its ad contract to Interpublic Group of Cos.' Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide, San Francisco.
N.D. Secretary of State's Office Reviewing Lottery Petitions.  The North Dakota secretary of state's office is reviewing the lottery petitions to make sure the signatures are in order.  Thus far, about 2,400 signatures have been rejected.

 – Addition of Powerball affects Penn. stores.  Across the state, Powerball and Powerplay - an extra game attached to Powerball - sales are averaging $4.8 million per drawing, according to Sally Danyluk, public relations director for the Pennsylvania Lottery.
An 'international lottery' that'll take you for a ride.  Beware of sudden prize notifications: As much as you may want to believe you've hit the jackpot, you haven't.
Retired Baltimore County Man Wins $175,000 Mega Millions Ticket on "Math-a-betical Equation".  The latest Maryland $175,000 second-tier winner from Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing uses a system of incorporating the first letters of family members' names with their alphabet position to determine the numbers he plays.
Michigan man claims $175,000 Mega Millions prize.  Lee Walton of Detroit was surprised to learn he had won a $175,000 Mega Millions prize after matching the first five numbers in the August 9 drawing.

 – UN Considers International Lottery.  World lottery chiefs met for the first time to discuss launching an international lottery that would benefit the cash-strapped United Nations and could have a first prize that makes payments from even the so-called "mega" lotteries look like small change.

Powerball no bonanza for Montana, South Dakota.  Financial reports show that if gambling trends followed those in Montana and South Dakota, Powerball lottery profits would not provide a money gusher for North Dakota's treasury.
Woman finds winning Lotto ticket in drawer.  A Fort Lauderdale woman claimed a $10 million Florida Lotto prize Monday, more than two months after the winning ticket was tossed into a sewing drawer.

 – Four fight settlement in global lottery scam .  A Canadian who made at least $50 million in an international lottery scam that targeted older people would have to repay only $6 million if a Madison County judge approves a settlement this week.  A man and three women - all conned by James Blair Down - are protesting the settlement because they don't think it's big enough.
Some Students Get Lottery-Money Shock.  Students registering for classes this week at South Carolina technical colleges are seeing the benefit of state lottery funds for the first time.

New Type of Lottery May Solve Social Security Dilemma.  Marc M. Groz, author of Forbes® Guide to the Markets and a leading authority on Wall Street, is proposing a fresh approach to lotteries that would strengthen the safety net, help to bridge projected deficits, and facilitate the creation of individual social security accounts.
Lottery to join in search for kids.  Taking a cue from the highway signs used to help find two abducted California teenagers, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is looking to print similar messages on lottery tickets.
Lottery to go to November ballot.  Supporters of a North Dakota lottery said Wednesday they had narrowly succeeded in gathering enough petition signatures to put the idea on the November ballot.

 – Pro, con square off on Ark. education lottery.  The former head of the Little Rock School Board stood on stage at a Baptist church Tuesday and urged development of an Arkansas state lottery, with proceeds flowing only to education.
Man jailed in Lauderdale lottery-ticket scam.  A Florida man was charged with grand theft after he tried to con a woman out of $5,000 in a lottery ticket scam, police said on Wednesday.
GTECH chief executive resigns.  Howard Cohen, GTECH Holdings Corp.'s chief executive, president and director, has resigned, the company announced Wednesday.  The online lottery products and services supplier said Cohen, 55, will be replaced by chairman Bruce Turner, 42, as president and chief executive.
